The
Director’s Discretionary Book Donation Program

Each year we direct our giving to certain types of institutions or regions of the country. In the past, we integrated our discretionary donations into the Bi-Annual Book Donation program.  At our annual staff retreat we decided to create the Director’s Discretionary Book Donation Program (DDBDP) that would be a stand alone program. We will now accept unsolicited requests for books as long as the request comes from our area of interest for that particular year.

Every October we will make an announcement on what regions of the country we will focus our giving. The giving preferences for each year will start on October 1, and end on September 30th of following year. Each year we will set aside an allotted number of books to be donated through this program. Once the allotted number of books has been depleted, donations through this program will end. The book donations will not be large.

The program will donate between 30 and 50 books that are age appropriate to each approved applicant organization. Organizations will not have a choice in the selection of book titles or the number of books they will receive. Organizations will be restricted to one donation per calendar year. Submitting a request does not mean that a book grant will be given. All applications are awarded at the discretion of the Executive Director. The process is simple and there will be no fees of any kind. The requesting organizations must provide a copy of the 501(c) 3* and a one-page typewritten description of how the books will be used by the requesting organization. In the one-page description the requestor must clearly articulate why the donation will benefit their organization. It is our preference that the books be utilized to expand a reading center or a remedial reading programming. The books have to be for use in a program or schools located in the United States. Foreign organizations that have a United State’s Federal Tax Exemption are not eligible for donations. Our response to your request may take up to 3 months. Our giving preferences for October 1, 2007 to September 30, 2008 are the States of Maine, Alabama, Kentucky, and Louisiana. We have allotted 1000 books for the 2007-2008 fiscal year.

If you have questions about the program, please direct them to Lauren Green, at 1green@pwirtr.org.  Our mailing address is Pathways Within, Inc., (DDBDP) PO Box 960154, Boston, MA 02196, Attention: Executive Director. We will not accept letters via e-mail.

All Children Need Books

Annually we will set aside twenty-five hundred books for individual children who do not have books at home. The Roads to Reading Initiative will donate one age appropriate book directly to a child who is eligible for Free School Lunch under the Title 1 guidelines and does not have books at home. We will send a book directly to the home of the child.  There will be no charge for the books. The book will be personalized with the child’s name placed on the inside cover of the book. Twenty-five hundred books have been set aside for this project, and we will make donations until the stock has been exhausted.
